MSYSA Parent of the Year ! |

Curt Behnke is the proud parent of his three daughters - Emily (16), Natalie (16), and Jessica (15). All three play within the Vardar East soccer club, and Curt notes that it keeps him very busy! The Behnke family has been involved in soccer for about 8 years when the girls first played in the Warren Youth Soccer League. Curt has done some coaching at the recreational level, but prefers cheering to coaching at his daughters' more competitive level. At times, Curt's medical knowledge is called upon during games and he unconditionally volunteers to assist any injured player - even if she plays for the other team. Curt is different from many parents because he has a low key demeanor and positive attitude that serves to calm the team during emotional times and inspire them when they are down. He serves as a good role model for not only the players, but also for his fellow parents. He also manages to administer the team website and provide action photos. Curt advises other parents to really enjoy the soccer experience with their kids before they grow up. Soccer can teach kids important life lessons, and it can bond families together.

Vardar East Patty Cooper Scholarship |
Vardar East is pleased to announce the Patty Cooper Memorial Scholarship to financially assist soccer players. The Patty Cooper Scholarship was established in 2009. This scholarship provides financial support to Vardar East travel soccer players who might otherwise not be able to afford to play. This Scholarship exists through the donations from the Cooper Family.
This scholarship was started in memory of my mother. My family has been extremely blessed by the generosity of others. Vardar East and my family want to give back to the soccer community. I have been playing soccer since I was a little girl and I can only imagine how contrary my life would be if I was unable to play soccer. I would like to share this, a wise woman once said, We can do no great things, only small things with great love. ~ Mother Teresa.
Thank You, Jessica Cooper
We are currently working on a formal Scholarship Request Form to be placed on this website. In the meantime, written requests are being accepted for approval by the board. For further information contact Rick Christensen at rick@vardareast.com

U-16 Boys Advance to State Cup Semi-Finals,
but fall short of reaching Finals.... |
The Vardar East U-16 Boys State Cup run is over for this year. They played the defending State Cup Champion Vardar, ranked number 1 in the State and number 20Nationally, in the State Cup Semi Finals Sunday in Saginaw. The game was scoreless after regulation time and two 15 minute overtime periods. The game proceeded to penalty kicks, and remained tied until the 7 th shooter.
I am proud of the boys and their performance in the State Cup. We proved over the course of 5 games that we belong with the top teams in the state. Today?s game was a good test, and althoughVardar carried the play at times, we did not back down and had our chances as well. Neither keeper really had to make many saves, but they had to be sharp on the many crosses that were played into the box. Today?s performance will give our boy?s confidence in the future knowing that they can perform in big games? said Coach Jerome Hickey. ?We will be back, better prepared and hungrier than ever.

On December 17, 2008 I had an experience of a lifetime! I was picked to be a flag and a ball girl for the Women?sUSA vs. China game at Ford Field, in Detroit. I arrived at Ford Field and joined my Coach Miriam and my teammates Malina & Margaret. We entered Ford Field and went into the locker room. Then we went on the field and practiced holding the flags for the national anthem.
After practicing, we were ready for the game. The American anthem was played and it was great to see all the women soccer players! I also got to hear the way the Chinese say their anthem. The game was about to start, we got soccer balls and ran to our places and the game started! I was behind the China goal; I think I had the best seat because I could see all the shots the USA team had on the China team. A couple of times the ball came over the wall and I had to throw the China goalie a new ball. That was awesome; I felt like I was part of the game!
During the game I notice that when you get older there are a lot more penalty kicks because they get super aggressive. The USA team has very awesome skills and it was great to watch how they pass the ball to each other. I also got to see the goal that Heather O?Reilly made. She is #9 which was awesome because I am #9! I really like Kristine Lilly, Kate Markgraf and Lindsay Tarpley! As I watched the game, it was an incredible feeling to look up and see all the people in the stands. I felt special.
Even though I didn?t get autographs, I will have the memories with me forever and maybe one day I?ll be the one giving autographs. A girl can dream!
I would like to thank Nike, US Soccer and Vardar East for this great experience!
